Even though hearing aids are the gold standard treatment for most cases of hearing loss, only about one in five people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually wears one, reports the Hearing Loss Association of America.

This may be in part because many people think of the clunky devices their parents or grandparents wore. In contrast, today’s hearing aids are sleek and discreet, and many boast surprising features you may not know about. We review some of these below.

They Are Water Resistant"Senior

Modern hearing aids have higher IP ratings than their older counterparts, thanks in part due to the protective Nano coating on the shell. Keep in mind, however, no hearing aids are 100% waterproof, so it’s important to not wear them in the bath, shower or pool.

They Can Act as a Wireless Headset

Most of today’s hearing aids have Bluetooth capabilities. This means they can pair with any other Bluetooth-enabled device and act as a wireless headset. You can answer calls hands-free, stream music as if you’re listening with a pair of earbuds and even watch TV at whatever volume that suits you.

They Can Be Remote Controlled

Because of their Bluetooth capabilities, they can pair with your smartphone. Many come with an app that allows you to control your hearing aids settings remotely, so you don’t have to fiddle with tiny buttons.

They Can Mask Tinnitus

If you have tinnitus, any hearing aids will provide some relief because they work by turning up the volume on the sounds in your environment. However, some provide additional relief by adding white noise just below the volume of your perceived tinnitus, helping you tune it out.

They Remember Your Settings

If you frequent MB Grille and prefer a certain setting on your hearing aids while there, eventually, some devices with geotagging will remember your preferred setting next time you’re there and automatically adjust to it.

They Combat the Occlusion Effect

According to one study, “Nowadays, modern hearing aids are openly adapted behind-the-ear versions with a visible device and an integrated microphone. This makes wearing hearing aids more comfortable because the ‘occlusion effect’ caused by the closure of the auditory canal, is avoided and especially the high frequencies are effectively amplified.”
