The sun is out, school is winding down, and summer is right around the corner. This means plenty of outdoor fun, like heading to the beach or playing frisbee at Thousand Oaks Community Park.

While summer is full of fun and adventure, you may have to give your hearing aids a bit more love and care this season to make sure they stay working their best.

Sweat and Humidity Can Damage Hearing Aids "Two

California summers are known for their heat. While many of us love it, higher temperatures can cause you to sweat more, especially during outdoor physical activity. Your hearing aids are designed to withstand some perspiration and moisture, which means they are safe to wear when in the heat.

However, make sure to wipe them off with a soft dry cloth every night before bed (or after a particularly sweaty session during the day.) It can also be a good idea to invest in a hearing aid drying box which can rid your device of excess moisture and extend the lifespan of your hearing aids.

Take Your Hearing Device Out When Swimming

While hearing aids are resistant to some moisture, they are by no means waterproof. So do not wear them when you take any dips in pools or lakes or any other body of water. If you’re heading to the pool or the beach, make sure to bring a waterproof case that you can put your hearing aids in before getting in the water. Also, always dry off thoroughly before putting your hearing aids back on.

Be Careful With Sunscreen and Bug Spray

It’s important to protect yourself from the elements this summer, which means regularly applying sunscreen and bug spray when outdoors. However, you don’t want to get any on your hearing aids! Instead, remove your hearing aids before applying any spray or lotion to avoid damaging your device. Put your hearing aids back on when the product has dried, and remember to do the same whenever you need to reapply.

Considering Hearing Aids This Summer?

Summer is better when you can connect with others and enjoy the sounds around you. Roughly 15% of American adults report some trouble hearing. If you’re one of them, make it a summer goal to schedule a hearing test.

The sooner hearing loss is diagnosed and treated with hearing aids or other assistive listening devices, the better it is for your health, social connections and overall quality of life.
